Urban Youth Program

JJDC sponsors the SIMBA/SIMSA Circle Youth Program. SIMBA stands for Safe In My Brother’s Arms and SIMSA stands for Safe In My Sister’s Arms. The SIMBA/SIMSA Circle is an Africentric community that creates a space for listening, teaching, and responding to the needs of young African American males and females. We are determined to rescue their gifts, release their potential, and restore their promise. All young African-American males/females, 8 to 18 years old, are invited to come to learn and have some fun with your neighbors in our monthly Rites of Passage program and workshops. Youth will participate in community events and learn the Seven Principles of Nguzo Saba. Nguzo Saba is an application that is necessary for the enhancement of our Africentric community.

    Housing Program

JJDC has a housing, mentorship, and employment program for “At-risk” youth, veterans and “restored” citizens. JJDC has renovated several single family houses and doubles. These units are furnished with furniture and the rent includes all utilities. JJDC can match its tenants with local employers through a structured employment program that focuses on having a strong supportive services component. Other services to be provided include financial classes, support groups, assistance with medical issues and bus passes, a computer GED tutorial, and referrals to other resources within the community. JJDC will work with all veterans and “restored” citizens to obtain employment and matched with a life coach, who will mentor them for at least twelve (12) months for personal development.

JJDC has a personal growth plan to accelerate individual personal development. With a myriad of self-help and personal improvement books, workshops, and classes available, an individual growth plan will help to narrow the choices and keep one focused and on track. . JJDC seeks to restore to full citizenship individuals like veterans, “at-risk” youth, and “restored” citizens, who have barriers to employment, education, and/or housing. We provide access to a wide range of programming to assist clients in overcoming the obstacles of their unique situations.

    urban farming

JJDC is the founder of the Kimball Farms Urban Farming Program. JJDC is a local grower to a juicing company in Columbus, Ohio. JJDC teaches adults and youth how to establish their own business within their community. The urban farming Project Objectives are:
  • Increase sustainable farming skills to adults and youth through hands-on work sessions with farmers reinforced by urban farming within their own neighborhood.
  • Introduce disadvantaged youth to sustainable agriculture career opportunities through meetings with landscapers, farmers, grocers, agricultural firms, chefs, and universities.
  • Provide disadvantaged communities with background on sustainable agriculture and lawn care practices though use of the Green to Grow Program curriculum offered by Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Share project results through a conference presentation held by Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
  • Give disadvantaged communities hands-on direct marketing experience by starting and participating in their own urban farming and lawn care/landscaping businesses.
  • Give disadvantaged communities hands-on direct access to lawn care/landscaping neighborhood beautification projects available in the community.
  • Provide a place for disadvantaged communities to share knowledge and skills with families and individuals without land of their own the opportunity to produce healthy food.
  • Construction trades
    training program

In collaboration with local Charter Schools, JJDC has establish a construction trades program called the Dare to Succeed Program. This collaboration implements a construction trades internship and employment program for “at-risk” inner city students in Columbus. The objective is that by the end of the school year, the students will initiate NCCER certification in a construction trade in addition to being employed at a local construction company.

The Dare to Succeed Program has received a Certificate of Recognition of Pre-Apprenticeship Program by the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council. This program identifies the necessity to bring jobs to neighborhoods and affordable housing to good-paying jobs. JJDC recognizes the importance of offering job training that results in being hired and affordable housing to help people move out of poverty. The benefit of this program encourages the collaboration of local government with the corporate sector to create jobs and affordable housing to people living in poverty.

JJDC believes in investing in the young men and women who have the potential to be powerful catalysts within the neighborhoods where they grew up. The students, who live in low income families, will be taught a professional career entrance into the construction trades industry. This type of education is important for young people because it provides youth with tools and critical skills to gain employment and provide for themselves and their families in the future.

    Prison
    mentorship

JJDC has collaborated with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC) to establish a prison mentorship program within three prisons in Ohio.

Studies show that the support and accountability provided by a reentry mentor can make the difference between a successful return to society and re-offending. One advantage of reentry mentoring over in-prison mentoring is that you can meet with your mentee any time and any place – as often as needed. That’s important because the first few hours, days, and weeks after release from prison is when ex-prisoners are highly vulnerable and most prone to feel overwhelmed. These are some important ways re-entry mentors benefit newly-released prisoners:
  • Meet them at the gate on release day and help celebrate their freedom
  • Provide transportation to their pre-arranged post-release housing Be there to provide emotional and spiritual support during the transition
  • Help them obtain appropriate clothing and food
  • Take them to church and introduce them to a Bible study group
  • Ensure they get connected with a local substance abuse support group Help them access free or low-cost community resources and services
  • Serve as an accountability partner as the ex-prisoner implements the goals stated in their previously-developed reentry plan ved a Certificate of Recognition of Pre-Apprenticeship Program by the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council.
